Hildegard von Bingen, abbess and polymath, devoted herself to natural medicine, nutrition and the use of medicinal and aromatic plants in the 12th century. She is considered the first German doctor, natural scientist and pharmacist. Her understanding of nature is fascinating and still attracts great interest today.
In this book, the author Claudia Ritter explains three main aspects of Hildegard medicine:
MEDICINAL PLANTS – from columbine to zedoary
- Around 60 medicinal plants in clear portraits
- plant descriptions
- Applications by Hildegard and today
- Information on contraindications and risks
- recipes to try
NUTRITION Hildegard's fasting and nutritional recommendations are pragmatic, uncomplicated and she was way ahead of her time. With her simple instructions she supports the treatment of illnesses that we today call "diseases of affluence" or "diseases of civilization" and that can be traced back to nutritional errors and modern lifestyles. These include high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular diseases and some types of cancer.
MEDICINE Hildegard von Bingen's medicine includes treatment methods that result in a holistic therapy concept. Elimination and detoxification measures, heat and water applications such as baths, sweat baths, packs - i.e. compresses - or massages are also included.
